Clinical Significance

Transferrin binds iron released from the catabolism of hemoglobin or that absorbed by the intestine. It then carries iron to storage sites or to sites that can use the iron. One transferrin molecule can bind two ferric ions. Transferrin is responsible for 50-70% of iron binding capacity. Since other proteins may bind iron transferrin concentration correlates but is not identical to TIBC.

Increased transferrin levels are seen in iron deficiency, pregnancy and estrogen administration. Decreased transferrin levels are seen in liver disease, inflammation, malignancy, and may be decreased or normal in iron overload.
