Clinical Significance
About 2/3 of iron stores in the human body are in the form of ferritin. Serum ferritin concentration is useful to measure because it declines very early in a deficiency. High ferritin levels could be indicative of chronic disease, chronic inflammatory disorders and various malignancies. In patients receiving iron orally, serum ferritin measurements have been shown to be useful for the monitoring of iron stores. The serum ferritin concentration in males is generally up to three times higher than in pre-menopausal females.
