Specimen Requirements
Preparation of Patient:
Irons should be drawn before 12 Noon, but will be drawn at any time. Irons drawn after 12 Noon may exhibit up to a 30% decrease due to diurnal variation

Green Top 5mL Lithium Heparin Separator Tube

Interpretive Data:
Irons drawn after 12 noon may be decreased due to diurnal variation.

None
Clinical Significance
Increased iron levels seen in hemochromatosis, excessive parenteral administration of iron, acute iron toxicity and liver disease. Decreased iron levels are seen in iron deficiency, reduction in quantity of transferrin, chronic infections and chronic kidney disease.
