Clinical Significance
Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is a protein found on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. For acute infection, HBsAg typically appears shortly after exposure and disappears within 6 months. If longer than 6 months the infection is considered chronic.
Testing is typically performed in conjunction with Hepatitis B surface antibody (immunity) and Hepatitis B core antibody(exposure).
