Test Code HEPBS Hepatitis B Screening

Important Note

This screening test is for asymptomatic, non-pregnant adolescents and adults at high risk for HBV infection.

"High risk" is defined as:

- Persons born in countries and regions with a high prevalence of HBV infection (>2%)

- US-born persons not vaccinated as infants whose parents were born in regions with a very high prevalence of  HBV infection (i.e. >8%)

- HIV positive persons

- Men who have sex with men

- Injection drug users

- Household contacts or sexual partners of persons with HBV infection.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has determined that repeated screening is appropriate for beneficiaries with continued high risk who do not receive hepatitis B vaccination.

Hepatitis B Core Antibodies, Total (Anti-HBc, Total): Chemiluminometric Immunoassay

 

Reflex Testing: Specimens with weakly positive or equivocal HBV antibody results are sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories for Hepatitis B Antigen testing (Mayo code HBAG) and are billed separately.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 72 hours of draw.

 

Container/Tube: Gold-top serum gel tube

Specimen Volume: 2 mL of serum

Transport Temperature: Refrigerate

Collection Instructions: Forward promptly.
