Special Collection Instructions:

   Venipuncture:

  1. Collect and discard 4.5 mL whole blood in a blue top tube prior to specimen collection.  Mark tube(s) as WASTE.
  2. Fill Greiner Bio-One Vacuette tube to the black arrow. Do not overfill or underfill.
  3. Mix by inversion at least 5 times.
  4. Label all tubes with two positive patient identifiers per policy.  Place WASTE tube(s) and patient sample in transport bag.

   Indwelling Catheter:

  1. Prior to specimen collection, withdraw approximately 5 mL whole blood to clear the indwelling line.  Mark syringe as WASTE.
  2. Inspect line to assure it is free of clots.
  3. Collect blood using either a syringe or vacutainer system, filling the Greiner Bio-One Vacuette tube to the black arrow. Do not overfill or underfill.  When using a syringe, blood must be transferred immediately into the Greiner Bio-One Vacuette tube.
  4. Mix by inversion at least 5 times.

Clinical Significance

The VerifyNow system detects platelet activity by measuring in vitro platelet aggregation in a blood sample exposed to specific agonists. This includes inhibition of platelet activity in response to antiplatelet therapies. Patients given antiplatelet therapy such P2Y12 inhibitors (Ticagrelor, Clopidogrel, Prasugrel) or patients using aspirin can be tested on the VerifyNow system.
