Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within  4 hours of collection if stored ambient or within 24 hours of collection if stored refrigerated.

1. Submit  >1 mL urine in a sterile container from a midstream, “clean-catch,” random urine collection or a urinary catheter collection. No preservative.

2. Label container with two patient identifiers (patient’s first and last legal name and birthdate), specimen source, and date and time of collection.

3. Send specimen refrigerated.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note: 1. Specimen source is required. Specify source as bladder wash, clean-catch, catheter, cystoscopy, or suprapubic aspirate.
