Specimen Requirements
Preparation of Patient:
None.
Specimen Collection Instructions:
- It is recommended you begin the 24 hour urine collection in the morning.
- At the time you choose to start the collection, urinate into the toilet and flush as usual. DO NOT SAVE this urine in the jug. Record this start date and time on the jug label.
- For the next 24 hours collect all urine and add to the jug. Do not urinate directly into the jug if a preservative has been added.
- All urine is needed for accurate testing. If you fill the jug, continue the collection into any clean, dry, leak proof container. Call the labroatory for instructions if you have omitted or spilled any urine 231-935-6100 prompt 4.
- Keep the jug refrigerated during the entire collection. Refrigerate or store in a cooler with ice.
- Exactly 24 hours after th start time, urinate and ADD this last urine sample to the jug. Record this end date and time on the jug label. Collection is completed.
- Within 3 hours or less of completing the collection, deliver the jug and your lab order to the laboratory (preferably a hospital laboratory). Keep the jub cool during transport.

Clinical Significance
Daily urine output is 1-2 liters which contains only 40-80 mg of protein. The ability of the kidneys to filter 2,000 liters of blood per day without loss of large amounts of protein is one of the most important characteristics of a normal kidney. Normal function of both the glomerulus and tubules are required to achieve this. Damage to Procedure: Protein, urine, 24-hour, quantitative on AU Series either (or both) tends to result in protein excretion. Proteinuria occurs in nearly all diseases of the kidney and results from one or more mechanisms:
1. Damage to glomerular basement membrane which allows increased amounts of protein to enter the filtrate.
2. Impaired reabsorption of filtered protein by the tubular cells.
3.Secretions or loss of protein from the tubular cells.
4. Filtration of an abnormal protein which is too small to be retained by glomerular membrane (eg. Bence Jones proteinuria).
