Clinical Significance
Serum specimens from healthy men and non-pregnant women should not contain detectable levels of HCG.
Because of the sensitivity of the assay, specimens tested as positive during initial days after conception may later be negative due to the natural termination of the pregnancy. Natural termination occurs in 22% of clinically unrecognized pregnancies and 31% of pregnancies overall. HCG levels of 25mlU/ml have been observed as early as 7 to 10 days after conception, so HCG may be detected before a first missed menses.
The presence of HCG in serum does not always indicate pregnancy. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach, pancreas and ovary, hepatomas, choriocarcinoma and hydatidiform mole are tumors most commonly associated with ectopic HCG secretion.
