Gram Stain and Aerobic CulturePerforming Laboratory

Specimen should arrive within 48 hours of collection.
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Acceptable Specimens:
Aspirate, drainage fluid, or tissue. Swabs are acceptable when such specimens are not available.
Aspirate
1. Submit 1 mL of aspirated body fluid in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), specimen source, and date and time of collection.
3. Send specimen refrigerated.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required.
2. Anaerobic or aerobic transport swab is also acceptable.
Drainage Fluid
1. Submit 1 mL of drainage fluid in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), specimen source, and date and time of collection.
3. Send specimen refrigerated.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required.
2. Anaerobic or aerobic transport swab is also acceptable.
Tissue
1. Submit pea-sized tissue in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), specimen source, and date and time of collection.
3. Send specimen refrigerated.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Reference Values
Negative, no growthReflex testing: Susceptibility, identification, and/or typing is performed on pathogens or organisms with clinically significant concentration at an additional charge.
