Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimen

Nasopharyngeal swab in saline or Viral/Universal Transport media

Specimen must arrive within 96 hours of collection.

 

  1. Pass the swab gently through the more patent nostril about 3″ to 4″ (7.5 cm to 10 cm) into the nasopharynx, keeping the swab near the septum and the floor of the nose, parallel to the palate. Stop when resistance is met and do not force any further.  Gently rub and roll the swab and leave it in place for 10-15 seconds to absorb secretions before removing it.
  2. Place swab in the transport media.  Break or cut the handle end of the swab off so that it fits in the vial.  Place cap on vial. 
  3. Label specimen vial  with patient’s name, birthdate, ordering provider, collection date and time
  4. Specimen should be stored per package instructions and transported to the laboratory as soon as possible.
