Specimen Requirements
Preparation of Patient:
Collect a specimen representing the trough level just before the next dose. Samples from patients receiving fospheytoin should be drawn at least 2 hours following IV administration and 4 hours following IM administration per the recommendations of the manufacturer. The change in the phenytoin concentration is dependent on the amount of time that has elapsed since the administration of fosphenytoin.

Clinical Significance
Phenytoin is used primarily in the treatment of seizure disorders. It is highly effective in the control of grand mal, focal sensory and motor and psychomotor seizures but of no use in petit mal seizures. Phenytoin is also used in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular ectopic rhythms and paroxysmal atrial tachycardia due to digitalis toxicity.
Common brand names are Dilantin and Phenytek.
