Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.

 

Container/Tube: Light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube

Specimen Volume: 4.5 mL (pediatric: 2.7 mL) of sodium citrate whole blood

Transport Temperature: Ambient only

Collection Instructions: Do not refrigerate. Do not centrifuge.

Special Instructions

No coagulation testing is to be drawn via central line without a physician’s order. Light blue-top tubes must be full to achieve proper blood/anticoagulant ratio.

Reference Values

Adults: 8.6-12.2 seconds

Newborns: 10-15% higher than adult values, within adult normal ranges by 5-7 days postnatally.

Neonate: 20-25% higher than adult values

 

Critical value (automatic call-back) for International Normalized Ratio (INR):

Pediatric up to 21 years old:  ≥ 2.0 INR

21 years and older:  ≥ ≥5.0 INR
