Specimen Requirements

Preparation of Patient: 

Laboratory recommends a midstream "clean-catch" random urine collection.  See patient instructions female/male.  Follow physician's instructions if they differ from laboratory recommendation.

1. Patient should cleanse urethral area with wipes provided then pass a small amount of urine into the toilet and then stop.

2. At that point, then pass urine into a cup; half full is preferred.

3. If a detergent or gel is used in preparation of the patient, waste the first portion of the urine as these materials interfere with urine testing

Transport ambeint room temperature.  If testing delayed > 1 hour transport refrigerated 2-8°C.

1 hour ambient room temperature

8 hours refrigerated 2-8°C

Specimen Rejection:

Specimens containing preservatives, detergents or gels
