Specimen Requirements

Preparation of Patient: 

Collect a specimen representing the trough level just before the next dose

Green Top 5mL Lithium Heparin Separator Tube

Or

 

Gold Top 6mL SST Gel & Clot Activator Tube

Plasma or Serum

 

Specimen Volume: 

2.5 mL Plasma or Serum minimum .5 mL

 

Specimen Handling/Transport:

Separate plasma or serum from cells within 2 hours of collection.

Transport ambient room temperature or refrigerated 2 - 8°C if > 72 hours.

 

Specimen Stability/Storage:

72 hours ambient room temperature

5 days refrigerated 2-8°C

Clinical Significance

Phenobarbital has anticonvulsant activity not shared by most other barbiturates. It is particularly useful in grand mal and focal seizures and in seizures due to withdrawal of alcohol or barbiturates employed in the assay.
