Important Note

The following information is required:

  1. Clinical history
  2. Congenital anomalies/syndromes
  3. CVS/amniocentesis
  4. EGA
  5. Fetal malformations
  6. Mode of delivery
  7. Maternal problems during current pregnancy
  8. Infant weight, sex, liveborn/stillborn, non-reassuring FHT, APGAR 1 minute & 5 minute, IUGR Same information is required if multiple infants for all infants

 

Note: Chromosome and microbiology testing have separate order codes.  To ease the order process, use Placenta powerplan.

Specimen Requirements

Preparation of Patient:

None

 

Container Type:

Sterile plastic container for fresh specimens

 

Specimen Type:

Tissue

 

Specimen Handling/Transport:

  1. Immediately after collecting place in sterile plastic transport container suitable for size with lid secured
  2. Label with two positive patient identifiers and tissue description that matches order requisition.
  3. Immediately transport fresh specimens to the laboratory for processing.  For MMC, deliver directly to the Histology Lab on D3. Unless microbiology testing is ordered, then deliver directly to Microbiology Lab on D2.
  4. Non-MMC laboratories submit via courier to MMC.  Maintain fresh specimen on wet ice and/or refrigerated 2 - 8°C if chromosome analysis or microbiology testing is ordered.  If pathology tissue request only, buffered 10% formalin may be added to preserve specimen and sent ambient room temperature.

 

Specimen Stability/Storage:

Fresh 2 - 8°C refrigerated

Buffered 10% formalin ambient room temperature

Specimens are held for 14 days post pathology report verification unless requested by pathologist.
