Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of draw.

 

Container/Tube: Blood gas capillary tube or heparinized syringe or heparin (light green gel) tube.

Specimen Volume: 0.1 mL of whole blood from blood gas capillary tube or 1 mL of whole blood from heparinized syringe or 4 mL whole blood from a heparin (light green gel) tube. Do not centrifuge specimen.
Transport Temperature: Ambient
Collection Instructions: Forward promptly.

Note: Do not centrifuge.

Reference Values

134-146 mmol/L

Critical value (automatic call-back):

   Pediatric patients up to 21 years old:  ≤ 125 mmol/L, ≥ 155 mmol/L

   Patients 21 years and older:  ≤ 120 mmol/L, ≥ 160 mmolL
