Clinical Significance
Sodium, the major cation of extracellular fluid, maintains normal hydration and osmotic pressure. It is increased in excessive sweating, hypothalamic disease, diabetes insipidus and Cushings syndrome. It is decreased with diuretic medication, sweating, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, severe diarrhea and vomiting, hepatic cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus and inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion.
