Clinical Significance
Lipase measurements are used exclusively to investigate pancreatic disorders. With acute pancreatitis the serum level rises within 2-12 hour to two to four times (sometimes as much as 10 times) normal. Values may return to normal within 48-72 hours. Obstruction of the pancreatic duct may cause an increase in serum lipase activity. In acute and chronic renal disease, serum lipases may be slightly increased.
