Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube: Grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube


Specimen Volume: 1 mL of potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride plasma

Transport Temperature: Whole blood: ambient    Plasma aliquot: refrigerate

Collection Instructions: Fasting is preferred. Patient should be in a resting state (no exercise).

 

Specimen must be centrifuged within 1 hour of collection

 

For specimens collected on hospital premises: Immediately transport to the laboratory to meet centrifugation requirements.

 

For specimens collected in offsite draw stations:

1. Immediately place in centrifuge (within 1 hour of draw) and spin sample.

2. Remove plasma from cells within 3 hours.

3. Refrigerate plasma aliquot. Stable 14 days at 2-8° C.

4. Transport plasma aliquot next to cool pack to assure refrigerated temperature is maintained.

0.9 - 1.7 mmol/L

Critical value (automatic call-back):

Pediatric and adult patients:≥ 4.0 mmol/L
