Clinical Significance
Potassium, the major intracellular cation, contributes to cellular activity. Potassium is increased in urinary obstruction, tissue damage, primary adrenal insufficiency and diabetes mellitus. Hypokalemia exists in prolonged diarrhea and vomiting, diuretic administration and mineralocorticoid excess.
