Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Plasma
Container/Tube: Green-top (heparin) gel tube
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of heparinized plasma
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Centrifuge tube within 1 hour of draw.
Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
Serum
Container/Tube: Gold-top serum gel tube
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of serum
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Centrifuge tube within 1 hour of draw.
Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
Reference Values
3.4-5.0 mmol/L
Critical values (automatic call-back):
Pediatric patients up to 21 years old: ≤ 2.5 mmol/L, ≥ 6.5 mmmol/L
Patients 21 years and older: ≤2.5 mmol/L or ≥ 6.0 mmol/L
