Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 96 hours of draw.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Container/Tube: Green-top (heparin) gel tube-Specimen exposed to air is not acceptable.

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of heparinized plasma
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).


Serum
Container/Tube: Gold-top serum gel tube-Specimen exposed to air is not acceptable.

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of serum
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Reference Values

22-32 mmol/L

Critical value (automatic call-back):

Pediatric  patients up to 21 years old:   ≤ 16 mmol/L   35mmol/L

Patients 21 years and older:   ≤ 10 mmol/L, ≥  40 mmol/L
