Result Interpretation:
Index values:
- Index <0.9 are considered NEGATIVE. A negative result generally indicates that the patient has not been infected and is susceptible to HAV.
- Index ≥1.10 are considered POSITIVE. Indicates exposure or immunity to HAV
- Index ≥0.90 and <1.10 are considered EQUIVOCAL and must be repeated in duplicate. Samples which are Equivocal on 2 of the 3 replicates should be reported as Equivocal, and second sample should be collected and tested no less than 2 - 4 weeks later.
Clinical Significance
Hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of the liver that can severely damage the organ. The disease can result from non-infectious causes or from infectious viral and bacterial agents.
Serological diagnosis of acute viral hepatitis A depends upon the detection of IgM antibody as its appearance in the circulation demonstrates a recent exposure to HAV virus. IgM antibody to anti-HAV appears a few days after infection, reaches a peak rapidly and persists at elevated levels in the bloodstream for about two months, before declining during late convalescence. However, sensitive immunoassays may occasionally detect IgM for up to one year after acute hepatitis.
