Clinical Significance

Haptoglobin is an acid α2 acute-phase plasma glycoprotein and binds specifically to free plasma oxy-hemoglobin. The high molecular weight complex thus formed prevents filtering of hemoglobin by the kidneys. Low levels of haptoglobin are associated with hemolytic anemias and liver disease. Very high levels can develop in response to inflammatory conditions.
