Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of collection.

 

Container/Tube:  Green-top (lithium heparin) gel tube.

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of heparinized whole blood

Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Do not centrifuge.

Reference Values

For fasting specimens: 

0-16 years: 75-130 mg/dL

>17 years: 78-110 mg/dL

Critical value (automatic call-back): 

      for patients up to 21 years old  ≤ 35 mg/dL, ≥ 200 mg/dL 

      for patients 21 years and older  ≤ 50mg/dL, ≥500 mg/dL
