Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation

1. A fasting (8 hour) specimen is drawn.

2. Patient is given 100 g GlucolaTM.

3. Blood is to be drawn every hour for the next 3 hours.

4. Instruct patient as follows:

A. No food should be taken during the test period

B. No drinks, only sips of water, throughout test.

C. No smoking during the tes period

D. Limited exercise

E. Inform laboratory or nursing staff when symptoms of nausea, vomiting, dizziness, dyspnea, or fainting occur.

 

Specimen Collection

Specimen must arrive within 72 hours of draw.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Container/Tube: Green-top (heparin) gel tube or grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube

Specimen Volume: 1 mL of heparinized plasma or potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride plasma
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Fasting (8 hour). Centrifuge within 1 hour of draw. For grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride tube, do not centrifuge. Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).


Serum
Container/Tube: Gold-top serum gel tube

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of serum
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Fasting (8 hour). Centrifuge within 1 hour of draw. Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

Reference Values

Fasting: <105 mg/dL

1-Hour: <190 mg/dL

2-Hour: <165 mg/dL

3-Hour: <145 mg/dL

Critical values (automatic call-back):

      Pediatric patients up to 21 years old  35 mg/dL, ≥ 200 mg/dL 

      Patients 21 years and older  ≤ 50mg/dL, ≥500 mg/dL
