Methodology

Routine susceptibility testing of Group B positive samples is not applicable. Pharmacy has instituted a policy for antibiotic treatment. See Policy Stat document Group B Streptococcal Disease-Prevention-Evaluation-and Treatment

Specimen Requirements

1. Swab lower vagina (vaginal introitus) followed by rectum (ie, insert swab through anal sphincter) using same swab or 2 different swabs.

2. Swabbing both lower vagina and rectum significantly increases likelihood of detection.

3. Do not use a speculum to collect specimen.

4. Return swab to aerobic transport container (stable 24 hrs ambient) or place in BBL Lim Broth (preferred, stable 6 days refrigerated in LIM broth).

5. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), specimen source, and date and time of collection.
6. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required.

2. Rectal and/or vaginal swab is the usual specimen for group B strep culture done on pregnant women. Body surfaces of newborns are sometimes cultured for group B strep.

3. Cervical culture is not recommended for Group B Strep testing.

Reference Values

Negative for Group B Streptococcus
