Specimen must arrive within 30 minutes of collection.
6 mL of amniotic fluid. Centrifuge at 1,000 rpm for 3 minutes in original or detergent-free container. Transfer entire supernatant to a detergent-free container. Send supernatant specimen refrigerated within 4 hours of collection. If there is a delay in transport of >4 hours, send specimen frozen in plastic vial.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required.
2. Label specimens appropriately (sediment and supernatant).
3. If bilirubin is also ordered, specimen must be protected from light.
Reference Values
Immature: <40 mg/gTransitional: 40-50 mg/g
Mature: >50 mg/g
Interpretation of results by clinician should include consideration of clinical factors.
If result is 40-50 mg/g, #8929 Fetal Lung Profile, Amniotic Fluid will be performed at Mayo Medical Laboratories.
