Test Code FFN Fetal Fibronectin

Important Note

Limitations:

Specimen should be obtained prior to digital cervical examination or vaginal probe ultrasound examination as manipulation of the cervix may care the release of fetal fibronectin.

Specimen should not be tested if the patient has had sexual intercourse within 24 hours prior to the sampling time as semen and/or sperm present in the sample may increase the possibility of a false positive result.

Speculum use is required for accurate specimen collection.

Rupture of membranes should be ruled out prior to specimen collection since fetal fibronectin is found in both amniotic fluid and the fetal membranes.

Methodology

Solid Phase Immuno-Chromatographic Assay

Performing Laboratory

Munson Medical Center Laboratory

Manistee Hospital Laboratory

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive in laboratory within 8 hours of collection

Collect vaginal fluid from the posterior fornix of the vagina using the RapidfFN Hologic TLiIQ ® specimen collection kit.

Notes:

1. Use of a speculum is required for collection.

2. Do not use lubricants, soaps, disinfectants or creams (.e.g K-Y jelly, teadine, Monistat cream, hexachlorophene). These substances may interfere with the absorption of the specimen by the swab or with the analytical test reaction.

3. Do not collect specimen within 24 hours of  sexual intercourse

4. Collection must occur before any manual exam of the cervix, a vaginal ultrasound, obtaining of cultures or pap smear.

5. Using the swab from the kit, lightly rotate the swab across the posterior fornix of the vagina for approximately 10 seconds to absorb cervicovaginal secretions. Subsequent attempts to saturate the swab may invalidate the test.

6.Remove the swab and immerse the tip in the liquid in the vial provided n the kit..

7. Break the shaft  (at the score) even with the top of the vial.

8. Align the shaft with the hole inside of the tube cap and push down tightly over the shaft, thereby sealing the tube.

9. Label vial with 2 patient identifiers (first and last name and birthdate or medical record number). Use of a chart sticker is acceptable.

10. Write the date & time collected on the vial or chart sticker.

11. Immediately transport specimen to the laboratory at room temperature.
