Clinical Significance

Fecal lipid is equal to a relatively constant 3 grams plus 2% of the daily dietary intake. Greater than normal fat excretion is called steatorrhea. Neutral fats are commonly associated with pancreatic maldigestion and fatty acids with small bowel disease. If screening tests are positive, a quantitative determination of fecal fat provides the definitive diagnostic test for it.
