Specimen Requirements

Preparation of Patient: 

Do not use alcohol wipes for patient preparation, use providone-iodine prep pad.

 

Container Type: 

5.5mL Grey Top Tube Sodium Fluoride(NaF)/Potassium Oxalate Grey Top Tube

Specimen Type:

Plasma

 

Specimen Volume: 

2.5 mL Plasma minimum .5 mL

 

Specimen Handling/Transport:

Do not open tube after collection. 

Transport ambient room temperature.

 

Specimen Stability/Storage:

Unopened 2 hours at room temperature 3 days refrigerated 2 - 8°C.

Clinical Significance

Alcohol is not normally present in the body.  It is rapidly absorbed from the stomach, the small intestine and the colon.  Blood alcohol is usually measured for medicolegal reasons to determine if a person is intoxicated.
