Clinical Significance
Creatinine is measured primarily to assess kidney function. The GFR equation results are most valid for patients with some degree of renal impairment and are less reliable for serum creatinine values at or near the upper limit of the reference interval. A GFR value of <60, if persistent over a three-month period, suggests chronic renal disease. A GFR <15 is indicative of renal failure.
