Clinical Significance
Cortisol is the major glucocorticoid which is secreted by the adrenal cortex. Diurnal variation normally alters cortisol levels, causing am values to be greater than pm values. Combinations of morning and evening measurements and stimulation and suppression tests can offer strong evidence for diagnosis of specific adrenalrelated diseases. Chronic adrenal insufficiency (Addision’s disease) and adrenal overproduction (Cushing’s syndrome) are two examples of diseases that can be evaluated using coritsol levels.
