Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

 

Container/Tube: Sterile vial

Specimen Volume: 1 mL of spinal fluid

Transport Temperature: Refrigerate

Collection Instructions: Fasting. Patient should be in a resting state (no exercise). If bloody, remove from cells within 15 minutes of collection. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Reference Values

Interpretive comment: In viral meningitis, CSF Lactate is usually <2.8 mml/L (25 mg/dL) and almost always <3.9 mmol/L (35 mg/dL). In bacterial meningitis, CSF Lactate is usually > 3.9 mmol/L.
