Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Plasma

Container/Tube: Green-top (heparin) gel tube

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of heparinized plasma
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate plasma.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).

3. Plasma stable 24 hours refrigerated.


Serum
Container/Tube: Gold-top serum gel tube

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL of serum
Transport Temperature: Refrigerate
Collection Instructions: Forward promptly.

Note: 1. Indicate serum.
2. Label specimen appropriately (serum).

3. Serum stable for 7 days refrigerated.

Males

0-11 months: not established

1-14 years: 9.6-10.6 mg/dL

15-16 years: 9.5-10.5 mg/dL

17-18 years: 9.5-10.4 mg/dL

19-21 years: 9.3-10.3 mg/dL

≥22 years: 8.5-10.1 mg/dL

Critical values (automatic call-back):

  Pediatric patients up to 21 years old:   ≤ 6 or ≥ 12 mg/dL

 Patients 21 and older:  ≤ 6 or ≥ 13 mg/dL

Females

0-11 months: not established

1-11 years: 9.6-10.6 mg/dL

12-14 years: 9.5-10.4 mg/dL

15-18 years: 9.1-10.3 mg/dL

≥19 years: 8.5-10.1 mg/dL
