Clinical Significance
Beta (or Brain – Type) Natriuretic Peptide (or BNP) is member of the class of hormones that is secreted by the ventricles of the heart in response to increased stroke volume. BNP increases sodium retention and acts as a vasodilator thereby regulating blood pressure also. Both of these actions may reduce vascular fluid volume.
Increased circulating BNP levels are associated with congestive heart failure. The test is often used to assist physicians in distinguishing between congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
