Clinical Significance
In the liver bilirubin is conjugated with glucuronic acid. This results in a polar, water soluble bilirubin (conjugated bilirubin). Most of the conjugated bilirubin is actively excreted from the liver cells into the bile ducts. Under normal circumstances very small amounts of conjugated bilirubin enter the blood from the liver cells. Variations in conjugated bilirubin may be due to inherited defects of bilirubin metabolism, decreased excretion of bile, and diseases of the liver.
