Clinical Significance
Ketoacidosis is a condition of decreased plasma pH due to increased ketone bodies as seen in metabolic disturbances such as diabetes mellitus. Other causes of elevated ketones include states of fasting and hypoglycemia. Blood ketones are measured in serum or plasma with β-hydroxybutyrate levels. β-hydroxybutyrate represents approximately 75% of blood ketones.
