Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

Ascites, peritoneal fluid

 

Container/Tube: Sterile vial

Specimen Volume: 3 mL of body fluid

Transport Temperature: Refrigerate

Collection Instructions: Fluid should be removed from the cells within 1 hour of collection.

Reference Values

A serum to effusion albumin gradient (serum albumin minus fluid albumin) can be helpful in determination of a transudate or exudate.  A values less than 1.1 g/dL is seen in exudates.  This is a laboratory-developed test.
