Fluid should be removed from the cells within 1 hour of collection.

Clinical Significance

A serum to effusion albumin gradient (serum albumin minus fluid Albumin) can be helpful in determination of a transudate or exudate.  A value less than 1.1 g/dL is seen in exudates.
