NOTE: It is also acceptable to have the patient consume another source of glucose (jellybeans, sugar water, etc) if directed to by their provider.

Reporting
Reference Range:
70 - 140 mg/dL
Critical Decision:
Pediatric patients up to 21 years old ≤ 35 mg/dL, ≥ 200 mg/dL
Patients 21 years and older ≤ 50mg/dL, ≥500 mg/dL
Note: Critical values are called to the provider and communicated as critical. Documentation of the call is recorded in the patient record.
Clinical Significance
Glucose is the major energy source for the human body. Glucose determinations are ordered for the diagnosis and follow-up of abnormalities of carbohydrate metabolism. This tolerance is a definitive test for diabetes in nonpregnant patients and definitive test for diabetes in childhood.
