Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 12 hours of collection.

 

Vaginal discharge should be collected by dipping 2 swabs into the fluid that collects in the posterior fornix of the vagina. Immediately place the swabs into Diamond’s media. Forward promptly at ambient temperature.

Note: 1. Specimens submitted in saline are acceptable if they are examined immediately.

2. Specimens submitted on a transport swab are acceptable for detection of yeast and Gardnerella by Gram stain, but are not acceptable for Trichomonas examination.
